Radius produces a free tool for iOS called Locate for iBeacon as well as an inexpensive Mac app called MacBeacon. You can use a dedicated USB device plugged into a computer or a small computer like the Raspberry Pi, a self-contained USB device like Radius’ RadBeacon, or software running on a computing device that has the appropriate Bluetooth hardware. Bluetooth 4.0 is the first version that supports low-energy beacons, and hardware is widely available. With such a simple protocol, you don’t need much to get started. Each of the nine beacons had a unique signature, decoded by Alasdair Allan and Sandeep Mistry in Make magazine. The CES scavenger hunt application is a simple listener that implements a “virtual punch card.” Nine locations on the CES show floor were equipped with beacons, and conference attendees who visited all nine locations completed a virtual card in the application and were entitled to receive a gift from the show. It is possible to use a beacon’s broadcasts to perform “ranging,” or estimating the distance between a device and a beacon, but that is a function performed by the underlying operating system and cannot be done in a power-efficient manner. They are not able to find out what else is in the neighborhood because they are transmit-only devices. ![]() Beacons themselves have no ability to learn about geographic coordinates like latitude/longitude or street addresses to translate the three numbers in a beacon’s broadcast into a location, you need to pull from something else, such as a web service. With such a limited protocol, most of the exciting work happens inside an application running on your mobile device. A typical usage would be in a company with many stores: the major number would be used for a store number and the minor number might be used for a department or display. Major and minor numbers are assigned in whatever way the organization desires to use them. Periodic “beacon” transmissions contain three numbers: (1) a UUID, which is typically used for an organizationally unique identifier, such as a company, (2) a major number, and (3) a minor number. As he put it, “The first step in extending the mobile computing experience beyond the confines of that slab of glass in your pocket is when it can recognize the world around it and interact with it, and proximity is the ‘Hello’ of the Internet of Things revolution.”įor such a source of excitement in the industry, proximity is a simple protocol. When I first heard of the app, I almost bought a ticket to Las Vegas to experience the app for myself, so it was something of a cool moment to hear about the technology from the developer of an application that I’d admired from afar.Īfter the presentations, I had a chance to talk with David Helms of Radius. Helms was drawn to work at Radius for the same reason I was compelled to attend the iBeacon meetup. I got to see the ground floor of the disruption in action at the meetup in DC, which featured presentations by a few notable local companies, including Radius Networks, the developer of the CES scavenger hunt app for iOS. A few days ago, I tweeted about an analysis of the beacon market, which noted that “ are poised to transform how retailers, event organizers, transit systems, enterprises, and educational institutions communicate with people indoors” - and could even be used in home automation systems. Retailers are revolutionizing shopping by applying new indoor proximity technologies and developing the physical world analog of the data that a web-based retailer like Amazon can routinely collect. On a recent trip to Washington D.C., I attended the first DC iBeacon Meetup. Getting devices to interact with the world is the foundation of the Internet of Things, and enabling devices to learn about their surroundings is the “hello world” of mobility. ![]() As any programmer knows, writing the “hello, world” program is the canonical elementary exercise in any new programming language.

![]() Polymail came out of Y Combinator’s summer 2016 batch. Email is the most relevant form of external business communication today, so that’s the starting point for us, but our platform will continue to expand to serve the needs of our customers.” “Polymail is a software-as-a-service company first - our vision is to make Polymail the platform for external business communication, just as how Slack has become the platform for internal business communication. ![]() “All of the email apps that were acquired and shut down were consumer-focused and never developed a strong business model,” he said. That’s obviously a big challenge for Foo and Polymail, but the startup has focused on a business-first model from day one and that’s what will help it potentially survive that early hump of getting users. ![]() While you’ve probably heard more about them on the consumer side, like Sparrow or Mailbox, the point is that it’s hard to rip users away from an experience they are very familiar with. That’s kind of the promise of Slack - which adds new features in a drip-drip-drip way as it at times hesitates to try to move away from the core simple experience.īut at the same time, there is definitely a graveyard of startups that have tried to re-invent the experience of email. Instead of putting together a patchwork service loaded up with multiple tools, some businesses may find it easier to just go to a single service that picks all the best and most useful ones and bundles them into a clean interface. There’s still something to be said about focusing on simplicity, which has led to the success of plenty of Silicon Valley darlings like Slack. With Polymail, companies can unify their entire email and sales communication workflow with one platform.” “Businesses still have to rely on multiple point solutions from several different vendors to solve the problem they need, and in many cases, they don’t integrate well and end up costing a lot. “We’ve seen quite a few email-related tools over the past few years, but we believe the market is still highly fragmented,” Foo said. While born as a native app, most email users - whether that’s for typical email use cases or actual marketing tools - are probably used to working through a web interface so they can flip between platforms whenever they need, which seemed like it would initially hamper Polymail’s potential growth. The service brings together the kinds of products you have come to expect as a marketer or salesperson at a company, like tracking engagement with email and calendar functions. Polymail started off as a Mac app, but by expanding to being a web app, it sets it up for a wider audience accustomed to typical email services like GMail and other email marketing tools. There was also the need for users to access Polymail from any device without having to install a desktop app.” By far the biggest driver was the demand we’ve seen from Windows and PC users since we launched Polymail for Mac. “Our long-term vision for Polymail has always been to extend the inbox into a business and team communication platform, and so to achieve that we had become cross-platform for both Windows and Mac users. “The first iteration was as an email client, which we knew had to be a native desktop experience,” co-founder Brandon Foo said. Polymail, which was previously a Mac app, said it’s launching a web version today as it looks to enter some kind of parity with those services and move beyond just a niche application that might have some use cases. If you’re more of a Gmail power user (or even semi-power user) and other email services geared toward work, you’ve probably installed plenty of plugins like Rapportive to make your job a little bit easier.Īnd while it’s all fine to try to pull together a suite of plugins to make that a little bit easier, a startup called Polymail is hoping to rope that all into a single hub that will suit the needs of marketers and other businesses without having to piece together all of the bits from external tools. ![]() This episode concludes on 21 Jump Street.īooker and a young Teshima executive from Japan are sent to find B.B.
